Once power is supplied to the bilge pump, starting and stopping is completely automatic. The new model of Rule Mate bilge pumps feature a wire coil with a magnet cased in a box as opposed to a mercury float, allowing for space saving to be made. The electromagnetic field is disrupted by water resistance around
